'My Mama Told Me...'
Mothers are renowned for giving advice--because they care so much about our welfare. We asked Beliefnet members for the most memorable advice they received from their moms, whether or not they followed it. Here's a sampling of mothers' pearls of wisdom.

Mom told me to always keep a dime on me for an emergency phone call. Of course, it's not a dime anymore...but I always have money on me for a phone call home.

"No, that wooden board would not make a good slide!" I did anyway and got a buttfull of splinters! The laughter hurt worse than the splinters.

Since my momma died when I was only 14 months old...my gramma (her momma) did a lot of helping my dad raise me. Some of her favorite sayings to live by were:
Let go and let God (my most treasured advice).
What goes around comes around (I wholeheartedly believe this).
Treat others as you would be treated....She was priceless to me.

My mom always said: If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. I try to follow it, but I shamefully don't all the time.

Mom always said that people have to make their own mistakes in life--that's how they learn things--so one mustn't interfere with that. Also, she said "Go do what you want to do, and don't pay any attention to what others are doing." Bottom line being that when all is said and done, those who followed their hearts (instead of living their lives for others) will find themselves the happiest or most content.

My mom asked me to go thru the basics of cooking before I came out of home for further studies. Thank God I listened to her (usually I don't listen to anybody). Thankfully I did this time...else I would have starved to death in a foreign land.

We have a running joke in our house. If anybody's pondering something, someone else says, "You know what your mama says..." and the answer is ALWAYS one of these three (and it usually applies!):
1. You get what you pay for.
2. You can never own enough fine jewelry.
3. There are buttheads everywhere.
You have to know my 82-year-old prim and proper mother to truly appreciate the third one!

Live Each Day
My mother told me, "Live each day as if it were your last, because one of these days, you're gonna be right."

Marry for love, not for money or to avoid loneliness. Never go to bed mad, resolve issues. Only have the number of kids you can care for on your own. Plant a garden. Pick flowers. Look at rocks. Listen to the birds.

My mother taught me more by example. She treated everyone equally. My mother proved that no matter what color, race, religion or "handicap or disability" we ARE all equal! No labels, no preconceived ideas, just one human being to another. I have never forgotten that and have met the most wonderful people...people I might never have met had I had a prejudiced, bigoted upbringing.

My mom and my grandma, in heaven now...
*When cooking, always place handle of pot towards the back away from flames.
*Always watch children around ANY water.
*Get as much education as you can while younger.
*Talk to children at their level, not down to them.
*Not to stick finger in socket.
*Respect and unconditional love.
*And yes, wear that clean underwear.
Oh yes...AND they introduced me to GOD! Thank GOD.
